If you are just starting out feeding birds and only intend to put out one feeder, the tube feeder is your best option. Tube feeders are hollow Plexiglas cylinders with multiple feeding ports and perches. These hanging feeders attract species that typically feed off the ground, and perch size to some extent influences which species use them.

Large birds need large perches, whereas small birds can feed on either large or small perches. You can attach a tray to the bottom to catch scattered seeds and to allow larger species to feed.

Look specifically for feeders with metal feeding ports, which will help deter squirrels from chewing on your feeder. Hang the feeder at least 5 feet off the ground and enjoy a variety of birds that will visit.

Tube feeders without trays restrict access to only small birds. Remove the perches, and you've further restricted the feeder to only those birds that can easily cling-finches, chickadees, titmice and woodpeckers.
